Katie Smith is a young lady who set high goals for herself. She decided in high school that she was determined to earn a college degree, but in spite of good grades, a high class standing and extracurricular activities, Katie knew financing her college education would be difficult.
Her mother, Becky, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which forced Becky to quit her job. Additional medical bills left Katie’s family unable to pay for her college expenses. But Katie didn’t give up on her dream. She applied for and received the Jimmy Rane Foundation scholarship.
A Headland High School graduate, Katie attended Wallace Community College for two years and transferred to Troy University in Dothan. She majored in elementary education and is now teaching in Dothan. Katie has a passion for working with disabled children and plans to pursue a master’s degree in special education.
