A man who is respected both on and off the field, Gene Stallings played football for Texas A&M University under head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1954 to 1956. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957 and began a seven-year tenure as head football coach for his alma mater in 1965. He later coached professional football, serving as assistant coach to Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys for 14 years, as head coach for the St. Louis Cardinals for two years and as head coach of the Phoenix Cardinals for two years as well. Gene Stallings returned to collegiate football in 1990, when he became head football coach at the University of Alabama. He led the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1992, concluding his coaching duties there in 1996.
Stallings has received many awards, including National Coach of the Year, American Football Coaches’ Coach of the Year, Paul Bryant Coach of the Year and was the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year two times. In 2000, Stallings was awarded Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M University. In 2001, he was awarded the Legends Award from the All Sports Association in Dallas. Stallings has also received many humanitarian awards, including the Arthritis Humanitarian Award of Alabama, National Boys Club Alumni of the Year, Dallas Father of the Year, Humanitarian Award of the Lion’s Club of Alabama, and Paris Boys Club Wall of Honor. Stallings is the author of a book, Another Season, which describes his strong love for his late son, John Mark Stallings, who was born with Down syndrome. Stallings lives in Powderly, Texas.
